Dublin art galleries display some wonderful collections of art, including paintings by Irish and world-famous artists, both modern and more classical.

Here are some of the city's top galleries worth visiting, many of which are free admission.




Dublin Art GalleriesDublin Art Galleries: National Gallery of Ireland - Merrion Square West, Dublin

This is one of Europe's finest smaller art museums and is the first in a series of major civic buildings on the west side of Merrion Square. With more than 3,000 works, spanning from the 14th to the 20th centuries, the National Gallery can be fully covered in a morning or afternoon. The paintings include famous artists Monet, Sisley, Pissarro, Rembrandt, Goya and Caravaggio. The Yeats Museum is dedicated to the Irish family who were very talented in using a variety of mediums and includes paintings by the renowned 20th-century Irish artist Jack B. Yeats. The new Millennium Wing has recently opened and is a spectacular venue which is used to stage many major international exhibitions. Free guided tours are available on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

This impressive art gallery has a superb location - on the 5th floor of the well-known Guinness Storehouse. It has become a popular gallery where Irish artists are very keen to exhibit their work. With exhibits that are regularly changing, including both sculptures and paintings, there is an emphasis on World-Wide Web art and general innovation.

Dublin Art Galleries: Arthouse - Curved Street, Temple Bar, Dublin

The modern Arthouse is built in glass, metal and painted concrete and is very much for enthusiasts of the digital age. Inside there is a creative studio, performance venue, training centre and an exhibition space. The Art Information Bureau and the Artifact artist's database is a useful catalogue of more than 1,000 artists from Ireland and abroad - you are able to view categorised lists of artists and images of their work.

Dublin Art Galleries: The Bridge - 6 Upper Ormond Quay, Dublin

Located north of the River Liffey, this 18th-century Georgian House has been restored and now houses a wonderful, large open-plan gallery. There are many exhibits from both new and established Irish artists, in a variety of different styles and media. The exhibitions are reached by an internal bridge, from the gallery shop.

Dublin Art Galleries: Green On Red Galleries - 26-28 Lombard Street East, Dublin

This gallery, situated South of the River Liffey, is not one of Dublin's most popular and yet it is probably one of the best art galleries in the city. With regularly changing exhibitions that feature the work of some of the finest rising Irish and British artists, there is always something of interest to enjoy.

Dublin Art Galleries: Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art - Parnell Square North, Dublin

The very grand building was originally built as a town house in 1762, for the Earl of Charlemont. Situated north of the River Liffey, Lane collected both 19th-century Irish works of art and also impressionist paintings and the exhibition displays work by many famous artists, including Pissarro's Printemps, Morisot's Jour d'Été, Manet's Eva Gonzales, and probably the highlight of the collection, Renoir's Les Parapluies. There is also a recreation of the artist Francis Bacon's actual studio and a very stunning display of stained-glass pieces.

Dublin Art Galleries: Kerlin Gallery - Anne's Lane, South Anne Street, Dublin

This important commercial gallery can be found in the city centre, behind Grafton Street. Many of the country's important contemporary artists exhibit in this large space and this includes renowned international artists, such as New York artists Stephen McKenna, Sean Scully, Kathy Prendergast and Paul Seawright.

Dublin Art Galleries: National Photographic Archive - Temple Bar, Dublin

This exciting collection of Irish photographs includes contemporary work from many of the country's past photographers. With exhibitions including work from the 19th and 20th century, there is plenty to see.

Dublin Art Galleries: Original Print Gallery - 4 Temple Bar, Dublin

This splendid building specialises in limited edition prints by Irish artists. It is very modern in style and was designed by the same architect as the Temple Bar Gallery. The Black Church Print Studio is also located in the building and exhibits a range of prints.

Dublin Art Galleries: Rubicon Gallery - 10 St. Stephen's Green, Dublin

This second-floor gallery is in the city centre and overlooks St. Stephen's Green. Throughout the year there are many different exhibitions with a variety of work including all types of media.
